StepsCount, creator/developer of the Piezo Series activity trackers and the LogYourSteps healhy changes platform, are based in Deep River, Ontario, Canada. They believe evidence based tools support healthy choices & real behavior change. The Piezo pedometer series is considered the research gold standard for step and step based physical activity tracking. The affordable Piezo series are the only validated & guideline based physical activity monitoring devices. A Piezo is the physical activity monitoring device of choice for medical professionals, education professionals and corporations. As of 2016, the PiezoRx, the first medical grade exercise prescription device and the only device that specifically tracks the Physical Activity Guidelines , was recognized as a Class 1 Medical Device by Health Canada.
Piezo activity trackers utilize a true uniaxial piezoelectric sensor, have a 3V lithium cell battery with a secondary data back-up battery. The models capture a range of evidence/guideline based data including Steps, MVPA, minutes of MVPA per week, BOUTS (based on MPA threshold), MPA, VPA, TPA.
The bluetooth PiezoRxD and PiezoKD offer 160 days of data as well as Q 10 minute step report. MPA, VPA Thresholds and Step Filter are adjustable.
Piezo devices have been validated by independent researchers. Findings include: (* published, # pending publication)
# PiezoRx is a valid and reliable method for measuring sedentary time, and compares favourably to both the criterion standard and other commonly used assessment tools. These results suggest that the PiezoRx may be a useful tool for measuring sedentary behavior in field-based studies.
# PiezoRx is most accurate physical activity monitor for step counts and is the only activity monitor with absolute percent error below criterion value of 3% (other devices tested: Omron, Fitbit Zip, Fitbit HR, Sensa, ActiCal)
* PiezoRx exhibited the highest combined sensitivity (92.9%) and specificity (96.5%) for correctly identifying a bout of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity when measured by indirect calorimetry when compared to Actical, Actigraph, NL1000, Walk 4 Life
* PiezoRx has a lower absolute percent error/mean measurement bias vs Actical/Digiwalker, for slower speeds, range of BMI, range of ages, range of leg lengths.
* Piezo exhibited the highest accuracy of PA measurement in a range of healthy weight and overweight/obese participants during treadmill walking and running when compared to Digi-Walkers and Acticals
